Intimacy Direction was born out of the necessity to create a better working environment for actors, directors, and stage managers. When the body is the instrument, many situations and circumstances can cause harm.
With guided exercises to practice establishing and honoring one another’s boundaries, and a shared language to use around moments of contact, actors can experiment in rehearsal with confidence. Intimacy Direction takes the guesswork out of physical storytelling. To me, that is an artistic wounding that we then carry into the creations ever after. We're pushing against that bad experience or we're trying to incorporate it or we're trying to reclaim it. In some way, we are likely trying to process it through our art, consciously or unconsciously. So handling these scenes delicately, knowing that actors come through it with all sorts of different energies and different desires feels sacred. I see the role of intimacy direction as an opportunity to uplift the folk wisdom of our industry. With the right tools, we can stand in a circle and make decisions that benefit everybody. |
It was helpful to make people feel good about touch, which will help people work at the edge of their comfort zone -- in a good way. I thought you handled that delicate material well. - Stephen Webber
